My friend says that he does this, but I don't think it's true. I know you can buy song sets, but you can't just play anysong that you download to your 360 can you?

No, you can't. You have to download the specific song packs that are made available on the Xbox Live Marketplace.
Reply:You can only do it if you download certain softwares from the computer, but they may have viruses. Other wise you can't.
