How do you remove the vocals from a downloaded song? IS this possible with GarageBand?

Any suggestions on how to EASILY remove vocals from a song, thus making is instrumental? Or are there any sites where you can get loads of instrumental versions of songs? Lol, or can anyone tell me where to get instrumental versions of Tool and A Perfect Circle? Million thanks

Yes, its completely possible with garageband. You need to go into the track details. I don't have GB in front of me so i'm unsure now as to what the effect is called, you'll have to experiment: but you have to run the song track in dual mono, (copy the existing track onto another track) so you have two tracks of the song. In the track details, you will be able to phase shift each of the tracks so they are phased opposite (make sure its not a modulating phase shift). if the original song was mixed down with dual mono, you will be able to cancel out the vocal line. if it was recorded in true stereo, the vocals will be weak but still there.

That is essentially what the expensive voice removal software does.

so, yes, it can be done on garage band

good luck
Reply:how is that a great answer? Im really trying to follow step by step and i cant figure it out,

1 what is the effect called?

2 after you process the effect, what do you mean by phase back and forth between the 2 tracks? Report Abuse

Reply:you really can't do it very well in any modern song because of the way they are recorded. Best bet is to get a karaoke version of those songs. Both are available. Try www.soundchoice.com ( I have their version of Weak and powerless) and www.sunfly.com. pop hits monthly rock may also have them. You'll only get hit songs not whole albums tho and they won't be exactly like the originals but some are better than others.
