Can i get hit by a virus by downloading a mp3 format song?

i'm scared of using limewire because of the virus problem. I only want to use it for downloading songs. My friend told me mp3 songs aren't dangerous because they can't put a virus into it.

There can be a virus embedded in the mp3's code, although it is very rare because it is difficult to do. You are more likely to download spyware when you download an mp3.
Reply:It is hard for virus to infect the system through mp3 music format. These is a possibility that the file is not mp3 but a virus executable file. Media player don't execute the files as operating system does.

Reply:you can not trust any download from file sharing program, even if it is a .mp3 file it can have an embeded server or spyware included, it is still a risk, i suggest to pay like 10 usd per year and get unlimited safe and legal stuff, use google

Virus creators mask executable file names with popular file formats such as .jpeg, .mp3, .wav .zip, .rar etc. When ever you double click the program the virus starts its activity in the background.


If you want to download .mp3 files from the Internet update the virus definition of your anti-virus and then use it.
Reply:In addition to the above answers, whenever you download any file to your hard drive, before you open the file, right click on it and scan for virus.
Reply:true mp3 is only sound nothing else but becarefull download .rar , .exe and etc those files sometimes have virus.
Reply:It's crack that mp3 cannot be put a virus. There is no such things as sure no safety. If you really scard of virus just don't download and buy the cd if not take the risk. A few things that you can prevent virus or attack is that, open your anti-virus all the time and suggest you to do a back up.
Reply:limewire is built on java meaning yes there can be viruses in the mp3s,


I use limewire all the time though, just be careful, don't download things that are ridiculously tiny, while downloading try previewing it, if it says corrupted then delete it before it finishes downloading
